In November/22, we were at the Biodiesel BR2022 Conference, where much was said about the future of the energy industry.

Biodiesel is a biodegradable fuel derived from renewable sources such as vegetable oils and animal fats that, stimulated by a catalyst, react chemically and may be used to maintain a large part of the transport chain around the world. It can be applied as a fuel, just like ethanol.

Its use, therefore, brings a more sustainable way, stimulating agriculture and reducing pollution.

For the fuel industry, biodiesel is mixed with diesel itself, and each country has a law that governs the permitted amount of this mixture.

Just as in Brazil today 10% of biodiesel is allowed in the mixture of pumps (called B10), Europe acts with an average of 7% of mixture (B7), Argentina from 5 to 10% (B5 – B10) and Malaysia 30% (B30).

“The conference presented good perspectives in the Brazilian scenario with the possible increase of our mixture to B14, since an appreciation of environmental issues is foreseen.” – explained Lumina’s business manager, Carlos Diniz.

This symbolizes an increase, for example, in the production of soy oil, our main biodiesel matrix, bearing in mind that it is by crushing the grains that we extract the vegetable oil.

Each country has a more important matrix for obtaining oil.

The United States also has soybeans and animal tallow as its main source.

In Malaysia, Thailand and Indonesia, the main matrix is palm oil.

In Europe, a large part of the production is extracted through rapessed (or Colzo), in addition to tallow and UCO (recovered cooking oil).

At the event, in addition to biodiesel, another source of biofuel widely used in the United States was mentioned. It is the HVO or, as it is known, the green diesel. It replaces 100% of the fuel, not requiring the mixture that we mentioned earlier.

New challenges move the world, and we are present.

We go deeper.
